Today, we see one facility after another joining the march to Green Cleaning.
But building and facility managers want to make sure the Green products they select are also a good value for their money. They are not only comparing the effectiveness and cost of Green Cleaning products with traditional cleaning products but also with other Green products as well. Bill Blosser is the Certified Director of Facilities for the Minisink Unified Valley Central School District, New York. A wise shopper and statistician at heart, Blosser evaluated one conventional and two leading Green floor strippers to see how well they worked and how much they cost.
These were his findings:
• The non-Green product cost approximately 45 cents per quart (as per manufacturers mixing instructions). This product required about one hour to strip a 750-square-foot room, making it the most labor-intensive of the three products tested.
• One of the Green products, from an old and well-established manufacturer, was less labor-intensive—requiring only 30 minutes to strip 750 square feet—but it had an unpleasant odor that bothered Blosser’s employees. It cost a pricey 57 cents per quart—am increase of 27 percent.
• The third product, Clean Cut, was from Enviro-Solutions, a leading manufacturer of only Green Cleaning chemicals and products. This product had no odor problems and took just 25 minutes to strip a 750-square-foot room. It also cost only 31 cents per quart, the least expensive of all—a 31 percent savings in chemical costs and a 58% savings in labor. “So, as you can see, the best product was the most efficient,” says Blosser. “It also had no odors or any other negatives, and was the least expensive. Now, not only do we clean Green, we see green as well!”
