NO LONGER "GREEN" WHEN IT COMES TO BEING GREEN
Peterborough, Canada - January 31 , 2006 The University of Manitoba has been transferring to Green cleaning products for more than a year. "I have personal reasons for going Green," says Jasmin Ismailovic, the university’s manager of caretaking services, physical plant department. "I am concerned about the health of our 6,000 employees, the 28,000 students attending the university, and the environment itself." But, Ismailovic says he could not determine which chemical manufacturer produced the most effective environmentally preferable cleaning products. He decided the best way to tackle the issue was to test the Green cleaning chemicals on the 6 million-square-foot campus. To do so, he and his crew compared four different chemical brands for more than a year—often side-by-side—cleaning restrooms, foodservice areas, floors, and carpets. And, Ismailovic says the tests were quite revealing. "We were disappointed in how well some products performed, others produced unwanted odors that irritated our crew, and some manufacturers did not have a full product line," he says. "Having a full product line allows us to work with just one vendor, which is much easier for us." But after a year of testing, Ismailovic says one manufacturer's products stood out from all the rest.
