Jan 15, 2008 - Correlation Between School Attendance and Graduation Revealed

Peterborough, Canada-August 16, 2007-Green cleaning advocates have long said that Green cleaning can help students perform better-making it more likely that they will graduate from school-because the use of environmentally
preferable cleaning products helps produce a healthier school environment, reducing absenteeism significantly.

Apparently this correlation has been borne out in a new study conducted by the Consortium on Chicago School Research and released Tuesday, August 14, 2007. The study, which is the first of its kind every conducted, examined graduation rates for students entering 9th grade in school year 2000-2001 to determine the likelihood of their completing school.

It concluded that those students absent 20 or more days of school per semester had less than a 10 percent chance of graduating. Conversely, those missing four or fewer days had an 87 percent chance of graduating.

The main reason: school attendance directly impacted grade point averages. The better the attendance, the better the grades, the more likely the student would graduate.

According to the researchers, the conclusion may be obvious but what makes this study different is that similar studies conducted in the past place greater emphasis on such things as economic and racial factors to explain the poor graduation rate with less emphasis-or no emphasis-on school attendance.

"Graduation is a very predictable event," says Elaine Allensworth, chief author of the study. "Age, race, economic status. none of these tell us as much as freshman year [attendance] and grades."

Similar Studies

Other studies have come to similar conclusions, according to Mike Sawchuk, vice president and general manager of Enviro-Solutions, a leading manufacturer of Green cleaning products.

He points to a 2006 study, Greening America's Schools: Costs and Benefits, sponsored by the American Federation of Teachers, the American Institute of Architects, and the U.S. Green Building Council, that claimed over 60 million students and staff in the United States attend schools that are "unhealthy, restricting [students'] ability to learn," frequently caused by poor cleaning or the use of cleaning products that contribute to poor indoor environmental quality.

"Many schools across North America are unhealthy, resulting in illness and absenteeism," he says. "This contributes to lower test scores, poor student performance higher drop out rates, and lower incomes later in life. Our industry, along with more effective cleaning and the use of environmentally preferable cleaning products can help turn this around."
