In 1994, Gordon McArthur had already established himself as a
successful businessperson with more than 27 years ’ experience in
high-level management positions at a Fortune 100 company. However, he
left the power and security of the corporate position for the
excitement—and risk—of becoming an entrepreneur. Understanding the many
challenges ahead, McArthur founded Enviro-Solutions in 1994.
At the time, McArthur had been concerned with the increasingly poor
indoor environmental quality found in many North American facilities
and its effect on occupants and visitors to the facilities.
Additionally, he was aware of the impact some traditional cleaning
chemicals had on users of the products and on the environment.
Enviro-Solutions’ inception happened at a time when selling “Green”
concepts, especially in the professional cleaning industry, was
challenging. In fact, until 2004, the use of environmentally preferable
cleaning products was not even taken seriously by most members of the
jansan industry.
However, McArthur forged ahead with the goal of manufacturing cleaning products that meet the following criteria:

Are independently certified as being environmentally preferable by
either Green SealŪ or Canada’s Environmental Choice M Program, or at
least make only independently verifiable claims
- Work as well as—if not better than—traditional cleaning products used for the same or a similar purpose
- Are cost-competitive to traditional products’ major brands
Knock on the Door
After many years of slow to moderate growth, reflecting the industry’s
slow adoption of Green cleaning chemicals, things began to change
rather dramatically for Enviro-Solutions in 2002.
That year, a major American retailer with more than 1,200 stores asked
the company to help develop a program to replace traditional cleaning
products with comparable Green products—putting Enviro-Solutions to the
test. The retailer needed environmentally preferable cleaning products
that were as effective as traditional cleaning chemicals and
cost-competitive as well. In other words, Enviro-Solutions was asked to
prove their claims—which they overwhelmingly did.
At about the same time, there was increased interest surrounding Green
cleaning products in a variety of industry segments, including schools,
healthcare facilities, and government and commercial office buildings.
Some government entities, businesses, and organizations began insisting
that environmentally preferable cleaning products be used in place of
conventional products.
“Both of these occurrences—the [forward-thinking] retailer and the
greater interest in Green cleaning products—were the ‘knock on the
door’ we had been waiting for,” recalls McArthur. “Green cleaning
products were no longer for ‘tree huggers’ or [considered] a passing
fad. Now, major businesses and industries were giving them—and
Enviro-Solutions—a serious look.”
David vs. Goliath
In late 2004, McArthur sold the company to Charlotte Products, a
leading North American chemical manufacturer since 1956. Mike Sawchuk,
the company’s Vice President and General Manager, took over daily
operations. “Although the interest in Green cleaning products was
exploding,” explains Sawchuk, “the problem we encountered was how to
compete with the giants in our industry, who were now also introducing
lines of Green cleaning products.”
The answer
was education. According to Sawchuk, Green cleaning is much more than
just the use of environmentally preferable cleaning chemicals; it
includes a variety of products, such as high-quality matting systems,
low-moisture extractors, and high-efficiency vacuum cleaners.
“When our distributors realized that Green was not just chemicals but
an entire system, their interest in our products and what we had to
offer blossomed,” Sawchuk says. “Many giants of the industry treated
Green products as just another commodity; we see Green not only as a
safer and healthier way to clean but as a business opportunity as well.”

Under Sawchuk’s stewardship, Enviro-Solutions has grown into a leading
Green cleaning products manufacturer with more than 30 products now
Green-certified and more on the way. The company offers a full line of
products that includes professional, Green hand soap as well as
cleaners for restroom, floor, and carpet care; general and specialty
cleaning; and odor control.
